Expectations vs. Reality

Going into the Spring 2026 NCL tournament, I expected it to be mostly about solving problems quickly and moving on. What I didn’t anticipate was how much of the experience would revolve around uncertainty.

Not knowing where to start, second-guessing approaches, and sitting with problems that didn’t immediately make sense ended up being just as important as any specific knowledge I brought in.

Focusing on the Process

Since the NCL prohibits sharing challenge specifics, I can’t discuss particular problems or solutions. Even so, what stands out most is the process itself.

Some moments of progress felt almost accidental It was like pulling on a loose thread until it finally unraveled into something meaningful Other times, stepping away and returning later made all the difference

That constant shift between confusion and clarity became a defining pattern throughout the event.

One of the biggest lessons I took away was the importance of persistence.

It wasn’t always the most technically complex problems that slowed me down. More often, it was the ones that required:

• Flexibility
• A willingness to rethink assumptions

In that sense, the CTF felt less like a test of what I knew and more like a test of how I think.

Final Thoughts

Overall, I really enjoyed my experience in the Spring 2026 NCL competition and learned a ton.

I’d absolutely recommend it, and I’m planning to compete again in the fall.
